MSGH COMMUNITY COMPOST PROGRAM!
Turning Scraps into Soil: Montessori Students Lead the Way in Sustainable Living
At the Montessori School of Greater Hartford (MSGH), we teach our students that caring for the Earth begins with small, mindful actions — the kind that can grow into powerful habits of environmental stewardship.
This fall, our Adolescent Community invites families to join us in a truly hands-on sustainability project: the MSGH Community Compost Program.
Together, we’re turning everyday food scraps into nutrient-rich soil — while modeling real-world responsibility, science learning, and the Montessori value of respect for all living things.
♻️ How the Program Works
Start Date: Friday, October 17, 2025
Collection Day: Every Thursday
Drop-off Location: MSGH West Hartford Campus — 141 N Main St, West Hartford, CT 06107
(Bin located near the front entrance)
Each week, students collect compost from our West Hartford campus and transport it to our New Hartford site, where the material is composted and used to nourish our school gardens. The process gives students hands-on experience with ecology, biology, and environmental systems — lessons that connect directly to Montessori’s focus on cosmic education and interdependence.
Why Compost? Montessori Meets Environmental Science
Composting is more than just an eco-friendly habit — it’s a way to teach children that everything in nature has a purpose and a cycle.
Here’s what your family contributes when you compost:
Protecting the planet: Less waste goes to landfills, reducing methane emissions.
Building healthy soil: Compost improves soil structure, retains moisture, and restores nutrients.
Encouraging biodiversity: Worms, microbes, and beneficial organisms thrive in compost.
Fighting climate change: Composting helps sequester carbon and reduces the need for chemical fertilizers.
Montessori Connection: Composting helps children see firsthand how science, responsibility, and stewardship are connected — transforming an everyday task into an act of care for our planet.
